The Goddard School for Early Childhood Development, a nationally franchised child care and preschool program, recently opened its first Iowa location in Waukee. Liz Smith, a majority owner, opened the center in November with an initial enrollment of 60 students, which has since grown to 90. Smith, who taught in the Johnston elementary schools for seven years, quit that job so that she could start a premier preschool program for her own young children, she said. The center, located at 80 N.E. Carefree Lane, offers a comprehensive play-based curriculum developed with early childhood education experts. "Our teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to their students; it creates an extremely engaging environment, and when a student is engaged, they're learning," she said. The curriculum also incorporates science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) concepts. The center recently opened a second preschool classroom and plans to begin enrolling students for a developmental kindergarten class. Smith and her husband, Joe Smith, are the majority owners.
