The Iowa Clinic will present $50,000  on Friday to the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians Foundation for the Iowa Rural Physician Loan Repayment Program. Last year Gov. Terry Branstad signed legislation that appropriated $1.6 million for the program, which aims to increase the number of primary care physicians practicing in underserved rural areas of Iowa. The Iowa Clinic, an independent physician-owned multispecialty group, will be the first private organization to make a significant private donation to the program. Each year, 10 University of Iowa and 10 Des Moines University medical students who plan to specialize in family medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, general surgery or internal medicine are chosen for the program. Participants may receive up to $50,000 per year in student loan repayments for four years, provided they attend an Iowa-based medical residency program and practice in rural Iowa for at least five years.
