Seven of the 17 Iowa-based companies on the Business Record's Iowa Index posted stock price gains for the month of September. One company posted double-digit percentage gains in the month. Ten Iowa-based stocks posted losses, with two being double-digit percentage losses.

Meredith Corp. had the largest gain of the month with a 29.50% increase. Art's Way Manufacturing Co. had the second-biggest gain at 7.12%. Winnebago Industries Inc. had the third-biggest with a 4.06% increase.

On Sept. 24 it was reported that IAC/InterActiveCorp. was in advanced talks to acquire Des Moines-based magazine publisher Meredith Corp. On Oct. 7 it was announced that Meredith, producer of magazine titles such as Better Homes and Gardens and People, will be acquired by InterActiveCorp. Dotdash for $2.7 billion, in a deal that is expected to close by the end of the year.

Flexsteel Industries Inc. posted the biggest percentage loss at 11.57%. United Fire Group Inc. had the second-biggest loss with an 11.02% decrease. Casey's General Stores Inc. was third with a 7.88% decrease.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 17 Iowa-based public companies, decreased 1.32% in September, compared with a 5.31% decrease in the Nasdaq stock index and a 5.31% decrease in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The Iowa-based companies that make up the Iowa Index are in bold in this list of companies with sizable operations in the state.
