Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is notifying more than 400,000 Iowans that they are eligible for refunds from a $40 million fund tied to three buying club cases. The largest case was against Connecticut-based Vertrue Inc., a now-defunct company which had enrolled many Iowans unknowingly when they making a separate purchase from a different merchant. Vertrue paid the state of Iowa $32.6 million in appeal bond funds. The other cases were against Affinion Group Inc., which will pay $5 million for an allegedly misleading Iowans into signing up and paying for discount membership programs through what were labeled as free trials, and two companies affiliated with JCPenney, which will pay more than $2.7 million after allegedly charging JCPenney membership program customers for programs they weren't aware of.
