The Des Moines mayoral race will go to a runoff after incumbent Frank Cownie and challenger Jack Hatch failed to secure a majority of votes in Tuesday's city election. Cownie, the incumbent running for a fifth term, won the election by less than one percentage point – forcing the runoff. Cownie received 10,753 votes (43.5%) to Hatch's 10,579 votes (42.8%), the Des Moines Register reports. The runoff will be held Dec. 3. The race for the Des Moines City Council at-large seat between Jacquie Easley and Carl Voss as well as the race for in Ward 2 between Linda Westergaard and Skip Moore will also go to a runoff the same day. Courtney Clarke was elected Waukee's first woman mayor. See the Register’s full compilation of Polk and Dallas counties elections.
