Former U.S. Sen. John C. Culver died Wednesday at the age of 86 at his home in Washington, D.C., according to a statement released by the John C. Culver Public Policy Center at Simpson College. He was also the father of former Iowa Gov. Chet Culver. He will be buried in McGregor, Iowa. Culver was born in Minnesota and raised in Cedar Rapids. He graduated with honors from Harvard College in 1954 and won his first election in 1964 to the U.S. House of Representatives, beginning a decades-long career as a Democrat in both the House and Senate. Culver was the recipient of multiple awards and honors internationally, notably of six honorary degrees, the Norman E. Borlaug Lifetime Achievement Award of Public Service and the Leadership Award by the Congressional Award Joint Leadership Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Checchi; his sister, Katherine Baty; and his four children and eight grandchildren.
