Des Moines Register: Iowa grocers on Wednesday lost a lawsuit in district court that environmental groups worried would gut Iowa's bottle bill — a ruling that could leave the fate of the outdated, more than 40-year-old law in the hands of the Iowa Legislature. The Iowa Grocery Industry Association wanted to force the state Department of Natural Resources to create formal rules detailing how far Iowans will be asked to drive to turn bottles and cans in at redemption centers if their local grocer declines to take back containers it sold. The judge said the court had only limited jurisdiction in the matter and the DNR was within its authority to set redemption policy.
