The city of Des Moines will likely purchase a newly constructed downtown parking garage at the center of two court proceedings after the structure’s developers declined to oppose the proposed sale, papers filed in Polk County District Court indicate.

The 14.1 acres owned by the city of Des Moines east of the Des Moines River in an area called the Market District has been appraised for $11.1 million, but the property’s final sale price will be determined by costs associated with razing buildings and remediating environmental issues, according to information released in a public document today.

The city of Des Moines has joined Bankers Trust Co. in asking a Polk County District Court judge to quickly set a hearing on the financial institution’s request to sell a downtown parking garage to Des Moines, the city said in a statement issued on Monday.
