The number of Greater Des Moines homeowners who owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth rose during the first quarter, according to real estate analytics firm CoreLogic Inc.

Almost 11 percent of residential mortgages were in negative equity compared with 9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to a release. An additional 5.4 percent, or 6,277 residential properties, were in near-negative equity for the first quarter compared with 4.7 percent, or 5,504, at the end of 2013.
