The Iowa Architectural Foundation is offering a free look inside the workings of Rowat Cut Stone & Marble Co., a Des Moines business that was founded in 1882 to supply stone for the Iowa Capitol, as well as the uses of stone as a building material. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. April 8 at Rowat Cut Stone & Marble, 110 S.E. Seventh St. After the tour, the group will move the Iowa State Bar Association conference center for an interactive presentation on the traditional art of stone carving and the use and types of stone on notable buildings throughout Iowa. Speakers include Teresa Van Vleet-Danos, owner of Rowat Cut Stone & Marble, Ben Mayer, a stone carver, and Tina Rhodes, an architectural technician at FRK Architects + Engineers in West Des Moines.
