1. Iowa Events Center has record year

The Iowa Events Center earned a record profit this past fiscal year. Operators credited the venue's strong financial year in part to the Iowa Wild hockey team's inaugural season, transformed spaces, including the opening of the KetelOne Bar at the Willis Auto Campus Lounge, and several sold-out concerts.

Des Moines was on the downside of a list that ranks how well the nation's 150 largest cities have recovered from the recession. But, Des Moines ranks No. 4 on a list of the top 10 cities for millennials to buy a home in. 


3. Jacobson Cos. sold for French logistics group

A French logistics group will buy Clive-based Jacobson Cos., which runs warehouses across 142 U.S. sites and a large fleet of tractors and semitrailers.The global air, sea and land transport group Norbert Dentressangle will pay $750 million to the private equity fund Oak Hill Capital Partners for the company in a debt-free transaction that is expected to close in mid-September. 


4. Des Moines and Seattle home loan banks in merger talks

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle have entered into an exclusivity arrangement regarding a potential mergerof the two banks. Both banks are on solid financial footing, but a merger could result in a stronger entity, the banks' chief executives said. Should the banks pursue a merger, the combined bank is expected to be based in Des Moines.


5. Microsoft has paid $6 million, so far, for Willow Creek Golf Course land

Deeds were filed this week for Microsoft Corp.'s purchase of about 110 acres at Willow Creek Golf Course, with more purchases expected to be made official soon. Overall, Microsoft will acquire about 160 acres for its $1 billion data center.Read more
