A cooling system for buildings using 3-D-printed ceramics earned an Iowa State University architecture team a $10,000 national award in masonry design and constructionAssistant professors Shelby Doyle and Nicholas Senske, lecturer Leslie Forehand and computation/construction lab associate Erin Hunt won a Joan B. Calambokidis Innovation in Masonry award in the young architects and engineers category for their project “Mashrabiya 2.0.” The project is a 3-D-printed facade that can be integrated in a building’s mechanical system to control light, airflow and privacy while allowing evaporative cooling. The team was reportedly inspired by traditional Arabic lace screens.
