MPO announced $16.5M in grants for regional transportation projects
Wednesday, June 15, 2022 10:37 AM
The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization has announced more than
$16.5 million in grants for 13 projects
in Central Iowa. According to a news release, the projects include pavement reconstruction in Grimes and an interstate interchange in Clive. There are road reconstruction projects in Altoona and Windsor Heights, bridge improvements in Des Moines, and trail improvements in Polk County and West Des Moines, among other projects. The funding also supports new buses for the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority. Bob Andeweg, MPO chair and mayor of Urbandale, said the grant awards will help “support the region as it invests in a regional transportation network for all residents.” The grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Block Grant Program and the Surface Transportation Block Grant Set-Aside Program. The grant money, administered by the MPO, becomes available for the projects in October 2025. MPO staff scored the projects based on how they meet performance measures outlined in the Mobilizing Tomorrow Plan. Public input was also considered.
