Glanton, Iowa's first black female legislator, dies
Des Moines Register: Willie Stevenson Glanton, a prominent black leader and Iowa's first black female legislator, died Thursday at age 95. Glanton was the first woman to become an assistant Polk County attorney. She was Iowa's first black female legislator, serving in the state House of Representatives from 1965 to 1967. And she was the first woman and first black person to be elected president of the Iowa Chapter Federal Bar Association.
Illinois lawmakers override budget veto, ending two-year stalemate
New York Times: After more than two years of political sparring, missed payments to creditors and plunging credit ratings, Illinois did on Thursday what most states do every year. It finished a budget. A stalemate among lawmakers had gone on so long that Illinois had fallen $15 billion behind on bills and been warned that its credit rating might fall to junk status, worse than any other state.

The unemployment rate, meanwhile, rose to 4.4 percent from 4.3 percent as more people entered the labor force in search of work.
