The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa has announced the winners of its Robert Mannheimer Youth Advocacy Awards. Natalie Andrade, 17, of Marshalltown and Waverly Zhao, 18, of Johnston are the winners of the $500 cash prize for their work in advocating for civil liberties. Natalie founded MUJERES, a Latina feminist organization in her high school, empowering Latinas in what it calls a culture of toxic masculinity. Waverly led student protests and school board advocacy efforts for Johnston Community of Racial Equity and is a strong proponent of equity and inclusion. The award is named as a memorial to Des Moines attorney and civil liberties advocate Robert Mannheimer. ACLU of Iowa’s executive director, Mark Stringer, praised the winners for making a difference in promoting civil liberties in the state. Photo Credit: ACLU of Iowa
