Iowa Safe Schools has announced Harvey Guillén as the keynote speaker for its 20th annual Governor’s Conference on LGBTQ Youth, taking place April 11. Guillén is best known for his role as Guillermo de la Cruz in FX’s comedy “What We Do in the Shadows.” He has received five Critics Choice Award nominations and is the first queer Latinx actor recognized in the category of Best Supporting Actor. His career spans live-action, voice acting and producing TV shows and movies. “As an openly LGBTQ and Latino actor, Harvey’s story underscores the power of embracing who you are without apology,” Damian Thompson, interim executive director of Iowa Safe Schools, said in a prepared statement. “We know his journey will inspire our students to live authentically and lead with courage.”
