Ankeny, Des Moines lead metro in 5-year rent hikes

Ankeny and Johnston had the highest apartment rents in March in Greater Des Moines, while Des Moines saw the greatest percentage increase in average rents, according to real estate website RentCafe. Rents in Ankeny averaged $1,107, the highest in the metro and reflecting a 0.6% increase from a year ago and a 23% increase over the last five years. Johnston rents averaged $1,100, down 0.4% from a year ago and up 4.7% over five years. Average rents in Des Moines last month were $896, a 1.6% year-over-year increase and a 20.3% gain over the last five years. Urbandale had the least expensive rents last month at $813, while West Des Moines rents averaged $962. The national average rent in March was $1,430.
