Big City Burgers to replace Battani’s Pizza
Customers who eat at the new Big City Burgers and Greens will notice a big change in the feel of the space.
“We’re giving it a complete overhaul, lightening it up, opening it up,” said Jeff Duncan, chief operating officer of the new restaurant and catering service.
Big City Burgers and Greens and Catering Des Moines, whose primary investors are Des Moines developer Harry Bookey and his wife, Pamela Bass-Bookey, are in the process of moving into the old Battani’s Pizza site at Capital Square, 400 Locust St.
Patrons who frequented Battani’s might not recognize the renovated space.
Customers will be able to sit in an outdoor area, or in bad weather can sit inside the Capital Square atrium with a very outdoorsy feel, Duncan said.
The services offered in the space will change depending on the time of day.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the space will house Big City Burgers and Greens. At night, it will serve as a location for Catering Des Moines.
During restaurant hours, the menu will specialize in “grass-fed, green, organic” burgers and a smorgasbord of salads. Customers can choose from five kinds of lettuce and five toppings from a selection of about 50, including items such as tuna, shrimp and grilled chicken, Duncan said.
The goal is that the food will primarily come from local vendors, and already Duncan has been talking with Brewers Meats and Coyote Run Farm.
At night, Catering Des Moines will take over. Customers can rent out the space to host their event complete with catering services, or get the food delivered to a location of their choice.
The restaurant will transform to be a catering venue. The counter where customers order will turn into a bar. The ceiling will have lights built in that can come down at night to give the building a “live feeling,” with a goal of making the building feel more like a party venue.
“We’re gearing it up so we’ll have a cool kind of vibe during the day, but at night when we get the lights and everything … it’ll definitely feel like a big city,” Duncan said.
The venue, on track to be open in mid-November, will be able to accommodate around 200 people inside and outside.
A website should be up in the next few weeks that provides more information on pricing, Duncan said. To visit it, log on to www.bigcityburgersandgreens.com.
