Bird flu, a major threat to poultry industry, found in Iowa backyard poultry flock
Des Moines Register: Bird flu has been detected in a backyard poultry flock in western Iowa, state and federal agriculture departments said today. The positive case of the deadly avian disease was found in Pottawattamie County, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture. The facility has been quarantined, and the birds will be destroyed to prevent the spread of the disease. A 2015 outbreak of the disease led to the destruction of 32.7 million laying hens, turkeys and other birds in Iowa — about two-thirds of the 50.5 million nationally, according to the U.S. agriculture department.
