Blank Children’s Hospital gains new doctors, specialties
Blank Children’s Hospital has added three new medical specialties and increased its physician group to more than 80 doctors.
With the hiring of three new physicians, the Des Moines-based children’s hospital now offers specialty care in pediatric infectious diseases, pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation and pediatric orthopedics, increasing its list of specialties offered to 23. The physicians are among 11 doctors the hospital has hired this year.
“We are thrilled to be able to grow our provider group this year, as well as being able to offer new services locally that patients and families may have traveled for in the past,” said Dr. Ken Cheyne, medical director at Blank. The 88-bed hospital on the Iowa Methodist Medical Center campus is part of Iowa Health – Des Moines and cares for more than 60,000 children annually.
The new specialists are:
• Dr. Luis Castagnini, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist, will help care for children with vaccine-preventable diseases such as whooping cough and chicken pox, as well as serious infections such as meningitis, pneumonia, HIV/AIDS and influenza. He recently completed a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital. He also has received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas. He completed his pediatrics residency at Miami Children’s Hospital and went to medical school in Lima, Peru.
• Dr. Justin Ramsey, a specialist in pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation, completed a fellowship in pediatric rehabilitation at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He will help diagnose and treat children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and other conditions, as well as provide expertise for the hospital’s pediatric therapists. Ramsey completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., as well as a transitional internship at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines. He attended medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kan.
• Dr. Teresa Ferguson, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, joined Blank after completing a fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at the University of California, Davis/Shriners Hospital for Children. She will focus on caring for children with developmental hip dysplasia, foot deformities, hip disorders, limb disorders, neuromuscular disorders, congenital abnormalities, acute fractures, musculoskeletal infections and other conditions. She completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Iowa and is employed by Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons P.C.
