Fifteen animatronic dinosaurs will take over Blank Park Zoo from July to October, the zoo announced today.
The Dino Park Zoo experience will include the animatronic dinosaurs located throughout the zoo, dinosaur-themed experiences, educational programs and special events.
The scientifically accurate animatronic dinosaurs will include a 40-foot-long T. rex and a triceratops the size of a mail truck.
The exhibit has a Jurassic Park tie; it was designed by Don Lessem, known as “Dino Don,” a dinosaur expert who advised Steven Spielberg on the “Jurassic Park” movie.
“Dino Park is more than just a summer attraction,” Anna Shimerdla, CEO and president of the zoo, said at the exhibit announcement. “It’s part of our mission to connect people with animals, nature and conservation in fun and meaningful ways.”
The exhibit is included with the regular cost of admission.
“Dinosaurs are part of the history of animals and it’s part of some of the learning we do here,” she said. “It’s a way of connecting people in a different way to our own animals here.”
The exhibit will be incorporated into zoo events such as Zoo Brew, which will feature the dinosaur-themed Pseudo Sue from Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. in Decorah.
“Blank Park Zoo is, of course, one of our big jewels of the Des Moines metro area,” Greg Edwards, president and CEO of Catch Des Moines, said at the event. “It is a regional destination and soon, with all these events they’re bringing in, will become a national destination.”
More than 500,000 people visit the Blank Park Zoo annually, he added.
