Branstad notes STEM successes

174 wordsAll Latest News, Innovation and EntrepreneurshipGov. Terry Branstad today released a 306-page report highlighting the successes of the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council’s programs, which focus on special programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Some of the key points included:
- Students who participated in the program scored an average 7 percentage points higher on the national percentile rankings on the Iowa Assessments in mathematics, 6 percentage points higher in science and 4 percentage points higher in reading than their peers.
- Some 45 percent of STEM scale-up program participants said they were very interested in working in Iowa, compared with 39 percent of students statewide.
- Nine in 10 Iowans thought STEM education should be a priority in their local school districts, but only 46 percent said it is treated as a priority.
- Forty-six corporate partners contributed $559,239 in 2015-2016, a 20 percent increase over the year before.
“STEM provides students with knowledge, confidence and problem-solving skills that will help them succeed in their personal and professional lives,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds, who co-chairs the council.
