Broadlawns board names Vilums as interim president and CEO
The board of directors of Broadlawns Medical Center recently named Karl Vilums as interim president and CEO. Vilums has been the chief financial officer of Broadlawns since January 2014. He will begin his interim duties on April 16, upon the retirement of Jody Jenner, who in January announced his plans to retire as president and CEO on April 15. During his 15-year tenure at Broadlawns, Jenner oversaw more than $140 million in capital improvement initiatives as part of his vision to make Broadlawns the best public hospital in the nation. Under his leadership, Broadlawns established an award-winning registered apprenticeship program to provide career opportunities in health care for marginalized individuals. The safety-net hospital also established a jointly administered psychiatric residency program with UnityPoint Health-Des Moines. Most recently, Jenner led the hospital through the worst health care pandemic in the organization’s 97-year history. The Broadlawns board approved Vilums as interim president and CEO at its March 16 meeting. Before coming to Broadlawns as CFO, Vilums held CFO roles with Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, Wyo., and St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City, Neb. In a March 17 memo to physicians and staff, Board Chair J. Marc Ward said a national search firm is being used “to ensure a broad reach for highly qualified candidates, and we intend to begin interviewing potential leaders in the very near future.” The board plans to engage members of the staff and the community in portions of the interviewing process, he wrote.
