Broadlawns opens new 14-unit inpatient mental health unit
Broadlawns Medical Center announced Wednesday that it has expanded its inpatient behavioral health unit with the addition of a newly completed 14-bed unit. The new unit, located on the lower level of the Sand Building, brings the county hospital’s licensed capacity to 44 inpatient mental health beds. CEO Jody Jenner said the nearly 50 percent expansion is an effort to address the shortfall of available inpatient beds for mental health patients in Greater Des Moines. The 14-bed unit, which includes a four-season room that will enable access to sunlight and views of the woodlands that surround the property, will largely focus on treating patients who have been diagnosed with major depression. Broadlawns completed a renovation of the existing 30-bed Inpatient Behavioral Health unit in March 2016, and a year later expanded its outpatient mental health clinic in the newly constructed Broadlawns Medical Plaza.
