The Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) had a booth to represent the state’s wind energy interests at the American Wind Energy Association’s 2011 Windpower Conference and Exhibition earlier this week. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at Iowa’s wind energy industry, according to IDED statistics.

2,534: Number of wind turbines installed across the state.

3,675: State’s wind generation output in megawatts, good for second place nationally.

7: Number of community colleges that have joined the three state universities to form wind energy training programs.

2,300:
Approximate number of Iowans employed by the state’s approximately 80 wind energy-related businesses.

15: Iowa leads the nation in wind generation, with 15 percent of its electricity coming from that source. The IDED expects that number to reach 20 percent this year.
