If you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday you might see Catch Des Moines’ new hype video, promoting the region as a destination for sporting events.

The 30-second ad, which was released on Jan. 31, will air in Catch Des Moines’ designated market area, or about the central third of Iowa, during pregame coverage a little before 5 p.m., and then again during halftime.

Brock Konrad, vice president of marketing at Catch Des Moines, said the organization hopes airing the ad during the Super Bowl will help build on the region’s reputation as a destination for sporting events.

“Obviously, with it being the biggest sporting event of the year, everybody watches the Super Bowl whether you’re a big sports fan or not,” he said. “For target audience, there are leisure travelers who come here and experience some of our minor league sports teams we have throughout the year, but there are also so many parents with kids that do sporting events and they travel all over the Midwest or the country for youth tournaments, and I think this shows that those events are being hosted in Greater Des Moines and that they can be.”

Konrad said airing the ad during the Super Bowl also can give people living in the Des Moines area a sense of pride in the city being a destination for sporting events.

It’s the first time Catch Des Moines has aired an ad during the Super Bowl. Catch Des Moines spent $20,000 to air the ad — $10,000 for each appearance — which totals about 1.6% of the organization’s advertising budget, Konrad said.

The ad will also air during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games televised from Des Moines in March. That ad will be played in a little broader market that reaches more of the state, including Cedar Rapids and Waterloo, Konrad said.

“For us, a commercial during the Super Bowl in Central Iowa just shows again the banner year we’re having for sports in Greater Des Moines this year, but also shows what Catch Des Moines does in bringing those events here.”
