A bill signed into law by President Joe Biden last month granted a minimum 90% federal cost share for any emergency or major disaster declaration occurring between Jan. 1, 2020 and Dec. 31, 2021 — covering the Aug. 10, 2020, derecho that pummeled parts of Iowa, particularly Cedar Rapids, with hurricane-force winds. That’s a larger share than the 75% the Federal Emergency Management Agency typically takes on.
