The 1940 Iowa Census has been indexed and photographs and information from the census are now available online.

The Iowa Genealogical Society originally estimated it would take until the end of the year to complete the task of indexing 1.5 million entries for Iowa, but the society was actually able to index everything in just two months.

Censuses are among the basic building blocks in family history research – they reveal amazing pieces of information, from places of birth, citizenship status, income or in the case of 1940, whether a family member worked for the CCC or WPA earlier in the year,” said Theresa Liewer, a volunteer for the group.
