Des Moines Public Library and Latinx Immigrants of Iowa are hosting a Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Saturday at Central Library from 4-6:30 p.m. The holiday is widely observed in Mexico and other locations as a celebration of life for loved ones who have passed away. “Día de Muertos is a cherished celebration for Latinx Immigrants of Iowa, as it offers a way for the community to come together, honor loved ones who have passed, and share our traditions with others,” Jose Alvarado, president and founder of Latinx Immigrants of Iowa, said in a news release. The free event will feature a large-scale ofrenda, or altar, that volunteers started working on in September as well as a Catrina costume contest and traditional foods.
