According to an email sent Tuesday from CIRAS Director Mike O’Donnell, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) notified CIRAS last week that it was stopping support for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program, effective immediately because the program is “no longer aligned with the priorities of the administration.”
The email said 10 other states that receive funding from the MEP received the same letter from NIST.
“The MEP is the largest federal funding source at CIRAS, and this unexpected cut impacts the availability and affordability of our services in both the near and long term,” the email from O’Donnell said.
Due to support from the state, Iowa State University and other federal funding sources, CIRAS expects to “fulfill all our commitments and retain our staff,” the email said.
“In the coming weeks, we’ll continue to look for opportunities to restore MEP funding and redefine our business model. Even more important, we’ll continue to provide you with expert advice and an outsider perspective as you face your toughest challenges,” the email said.
In a statement emailed to the Business Record about the funding cut, O’Donnell said:
“The Manufacturing Extension Partnership National Network is a public-private partnership that delivers comprehensive solutions to U.S. manufacturers, fueling growth and advancing U.S. manufacturing. Over the last five years, through MEP and other programs, CIRAS and its partners have helped more than 4,600 businesses across the state, creating an economic impact of more than $2.8 billion.
“For 20 years, CIRAS has administered the MEP network in Iowa. During fiscal year 2024, CIRAS received $2.3 million annually in federal funding to support Iowa manufacturers through the MEP national network.”
Created in 1963, CIRAS aims to help businesses grow by providing research and training as well as workforce, technology and leadership support and other services. It is part of the ISU College of Engineering and the Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations.
