The city of Des Moines has received $5 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which will be used to install a new pump station at Southeast Fourth and Shaw streets and to rehabilitate sanitary sewers on the northwest side. About $2 million of the funding will be allocated for the new pump station and approximately $3 million will be spent on the sewer lining projects. The new pump station and improvements to the sewers are intended to reduce the potential for sewer failures and protect local businesses and residences from flooding. Brett Mills, director of the Iowa Department of Economic Development, presented the check yesterday.
