The Des Moines Urban Experience plans its annual Iowa Juneteenth Neighbors Day this month. This event takes place in Western Gateway Park in Des Moines from noon to 7 p.m. on June 15. The event includes a full day of live music performances, a range of local food vendors, games and book walks. The theme for this year’s event is “Remembering Our History, Releasing the Past, and Reshaping Our Future.” Juneteenth is a symbol recognizing the end of slavery. While Texas is the foundation for this celebration, Juneteenth has become a federal holiday and a day to celebrate freedom across the United States. In Greater Des Moines, Iowa Juneteenth is habitually celebrated on the third Saturday in June.
