Music is the focus of her career. Music helped lead her to her husband. Clogg’s love for music developed as she evolved from performer to educator and now has landed her a job as executive director of the Civic Music Association.

How did you first become interested in music? I have had a love for music ever since I was a child. My first experience with knowing I wanted to go into music was when the Des Moines Metro Opera visited my elementary school. I was enthralled with what they were doing on stage, and I knew that I someday wanted to have something to do with music.

Do you play any instruments, sing or compose music?

Actually, I majored in vocal performance in college. I started out as a singer and discovered that I liked to combine that love for singing with working with students and children. So I went into music education, which introduced me to arts administration. It has been a progression from performer to educator and now executive director.

What was your first job related to music?

I was assistant director of education at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. I helped develop education and outreach programs for the community.

What led you to join the Civic Music Association?

I have always had a strong interest in arts administration and had aspirations of becoming an executive director of an organization which in their mission had a strong combination of music and performances with education. I think the Civic Music Association is a perfect marriage of those two things.

What are you most excited about in your new role?

Expanding our education offerings and programming future concert seasons, and making the community more aware of the Civic Music Association.

What influence would you like to have?

I think it is really important that the community knows about the arts organizations, the strength they provide, how important they are in the community and how important it is to support all of the arts.

What are your suggestions for supporting the arts?

Try something new. If you haven’t been to a Civic Music Association concert, give it a try. Our season usually consists of three classical and three jazz (concerts). We have got something for everyone. I think it is important for people to go out of their comfort zone.

What is one career achievement that stands out in your mind?

Any time that I work with someone, whether it is a young child or an adult, and I am able to introduce them to music or the arts in a new way, I feel like I am making a difference.

Whom would you most like to educate and why?

Anyone who does not have access to music or the arts. Even with strong programs in schools, I don’t think there is ever enough.

What do you like to do on your days off?

I had a baby in July, so I like to spend time with my new son and my husband. When my baby was a week old, he went to one of the free concerts downtown; he is already getting quite an exposure to classical music.

Where does your husband work?

The Des Moines Symphony Academy. He does all the scheduling for kids that want to take private lessons and schedules in-school programs.

Did you meet through music?

We did. I was working at Opera Columbus (in Ohio) and he was working at the symphony.

What brought you back to Iowa?

I grew up here and was away for about nine years. I wanted to move back to start a family, and we both ended up getting jobs in our field, so it all worked out.
