Sixteen building permits were issued for new commercial projects in the Des Moines area in June, including four for data centers at two Microsoft Inc. campuses in West Des Moines, a review shows.

Two permits were issued for the construction of data centers at the Ginger West campus, 11100 Booneville Road, and two permits were issued for the construction of data centers at the Ginger East campus at 1475 S.E. Maffitt Lake Road. Turner Construction Co. is overseeing the construction of the two Ginger West data centers; Weitz Co. is overseeing the construction of the centers in Ginger East. The centers are each 244,676 square feet, records show.

Each of the projects in Ginger West is valued at $374.5 million; the Ginger East data center projects are each valued at $384 million.

Since Jan. 1, the valuation of all building permits issued by West Des Moines totals more than $1.65 billion, the highest calendar year valuation ever for the city, according to city building officials. More than $1.5 billion of the valuation is for Microsoft projects.

Overall, building permits valued at over $1.5 billion were issued in June for new projects in Polk County and 13 other communities surveyed by the Business Record.

Included in the projects that got underway in June is the construction of the two-story, 15,000-square-foot UnityPoint Health-Eyerly Ball mental health clinic at 1319 Pennsylvania Ave. in Des Moines. The clinic is being built on the Iowa Lutheran Hospital campus. Also underway is the construction of a Mullets restaurant in Norwalk Central, a mixed-use development in the middle of Norwalk, a suburb just south of Des Moines.
