The new services began on Sunday and offer rides that can be scheduled in real time or in advance. Trips must take place in a designated zone and may be shared with other riders. DART on Demand uses a smartphone app and smaller buses to provide service. Rides can be scheduled through an online portal or by calling 515-283-8100. Rides are $1.75. Customers who qualify for half fare and children ages 6-10 can ride for 75 cents. DART on Demand in the River Bend Neighborhood will run weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the Jordan Creek area, DART on Demand will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Erin Hockman, chief external affairs officer for DART, said the River Bend service “will support a pocket of our community … that can greatly benefit from this low-cost transportation service.” DART on Demand River Bend is funded in partnership with the Principal Foundation, Mid-Iowa Health Foundation, the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines and the Iowa Department of Transportation. According to a news release, DART also made route and schedule changes for Local Routes 52 and 72, Local Routes 3 and 74, and Express Routes 92, 95 and 96.
