Des Fresh moving its food truck operation to physical store
Des Fresh is moving its operation from a food truck to a storefront, the establishment’s owners announced. Stephanie Cox and Timothy Kommavongsa started Des Fresh in 2018, serving fresh foods and sandwiches from a restaurant on wheels. The restaurant will now occupy about 1,500 square feet in Cityville on 9th, located at 550 Ninth St. Des Fresh will be in space that had been occupied by a pizza and sandwich shop. “We established ourselves as occasional vendors at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market on Saturdays and at Peace Tree Brewing Co. on Sundays where we prepared and served food out of our truck in every type of weather imaginable,” Cox said in a news release. “Lines would form from the beginning to the very end of service or until we began running out of product; whichever came first.” Cox, Kommavongsa and others are making improvements to the space including painting, installing and upgrading kitchen appliances and designing the area to match the food they serve. Cox said the business hopes to sell the food truck to another potential vendor. Hubbell Realty Co. owns the mixed-used building that includes residential and commercial spaces. “The market for retail space is clearly slow right now, although we are seeing interest in second generation restaurant space and select small spaces for professional service businesses,” said Michael Smith, a Hubbell vice president, in a news release. An opening date for Des Fresh has not been announced.
