Des Moines has been named to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s annual list of cities that have the most Energy Star certified buildings for the second consecutive year. The city’s ranking improved to No. 23 in the nation for 2010, compared with No. 24 the prior year. Des Moines, which in 2009 was in a three-way tie with Philadelphia and Fort Collins, Colo., had 60 Energy Star certified buildings in 2010. The agency estimates that Des Moines’ 8.3 million square feet of Energy Star certified space translated into an estimated $3.7 million in savings last year. Philadelphia rose to 14th place in the most recent rankings, and Fort Collins no longer appears in the top 25.
