Debbie McClung, who had led strategic communications for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, is the city of Des Moines’ new chief communications officer, the city announced.

McClung replaces Al Sekta who retired this past summer.

McClung’s previous experience includes working in global corporate public relations and content marketing for construction and lighting companies, television news reporting and sports marketing for the University of Iowa’s athletic department.

McClung recently earned a master’s degree in strategic communication from Iowa. She is a member of Iowa’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s professional advisory board. She is accredited in public relations with the Public Relations Society of America.

“Debbie brings a wealth of experience that will bolster the city’s commitment to keeping our residents informed and connected to municipal services,” Assistant City Manager Jen Schulte said in a prepared statement.

At the city, McClung will direct Des Moines’ strategic communications efforts to keep residents and others informed about city services, community initiatives, and opportunities for public engagement. She will also lead an office that produces communications for the city’s leadership team and 17 departments.

McClung, who began her new job this week, will be paid $137,000 annually.
