Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) formally announced a partnership with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today.

DMACC will expand its criminal justice program by offering a new homeland security emphasis for students. As part of the expansion, DMACC will provide additional federally approved training classes to TSA and Des Moines International Airport employees.

DMACC will offer three classes through the program: transportation and security, an introduction to homeland security and security management.

Training classes will begin on Monday. The criminal justice classes emphasizing homeland security will be available beginning in the fall semester.

“The TSA has embarked upon a wider project across the country to invest in training for their employees,” said Bryan Burkhardt, director of DMACC’s Electronic Crime Institute, in a December interview with the Business Record. “I hope this can be an inroad for those who either want to work for the TSA or do private consulting or work with a lot of other crime fighting organizations.”

Officials don’t expect the classes to require any additional facility or equipment upgrades.
