DMOS reaches milestone in same-day total joint replacements
Just 11 months after introducing same-day total joint replacement surgery in Central Iowa, Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons and its Outpatient Orthopaedic Surgery Center on Friday celebrated the completion of the 100th successful same-day total joint replacement procedure. With the procedures, patients are able to have the surgery in the morning and are discharged by the afternoon. The milestone comes some 50 years after DMOS surgeons performed the first total hip replacement procedure in Iowa, which in comparison required more than a two-week hospital stay. “Today we are celebrating a milestone of perseverance, innovation and meticulous planning and execution,” said Jan Rhiner, OOSC administrator. “We started working with DMOS doctors nearly four years ago, visiting other surgery centers performing outpatient total joint replacement, establishing protocols and training modules, determining and mitigating risk as well as purchasing equipment to make a seamless and successful transition from inpatient to outpatient.” Approximately 1 million outpatient total joint procedures are being performed annually in the United States, a number that’s estimated to grow to 4 million per year. Orthopaedic surgeons’ consensus is that 40% of all people having total joint surgery would meet the requirements for same-day surgery.
