The Iowa Environmental Protection Commission on June 16 will consider asking the attorney general to levy fines of up to $10,000 a day for a range of environmental violations at Sleepy Hollow Campground & RV Park in Oxford.
The violations include high radium in tap water. Long exposures to high radium in drinking water can depress immune systems and cause anemia, cataracts and fractured teeth. The contaminant also can increase the risk of bone, liver and breast cancer.
Since 2010, the facility has been cited for problems with bacteria, radiation and other contaminants in its water, and for failing to have a certified operator and proper monitoring and records, inspectors reported. The owners failed to submit required reports on time even after notices of violation were issued.
