Shrinking the size of the federal government was among President Donald Trump’s campaign promises. He tasked billionaire Elon Musk and the new White House department, known as DOGE, with finding ways to reduce costs. A quick way to do that is slashing the amount of money the federal government spends on leased space.
According to the DOGE web page, as of March 5, the contracts that have been canceled leased nearly 9.6 million square feet of office and other spaces. The canceled leases were for space located in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands, a review shows.
The website estimates over $468 million in savings from the lease cancellations, which affected many federal departments including the Internal Revenue Service, National Park Service, Small Business Administration and Bureau of Indian Affairs.
A spokesperson for the General Services Administration, which manages the federal government’s property, told Politico that the department was told to terminate leases that allowed for an early exit, regardless of the size of the workforce that worked in the space or the amount of space that was being leased.
According to DOGE, leases have been canceled in the following Iowa cities:
- Davenport, where the Employment and Training Administration, a Department of Labor agency, leased 351 square feet. Savings are estimated at $20,376. Also terminated was a lease for 695 square feet for space used by the Food and Drug Administration. Savings from that termination are estimated at $12,312.
- Sioux City, where the Internal Revenue Service had a taxpayer assistance office that leased 5,254 square feet of space. Savings are estimated at $17,364. Also canceled was a lease for 14,366 square feet that was used by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa. Savings from that termination are estimated at $126,644.
- Ames, where the Federal Highway Administration leased 10,056 square feet of space for its Iowa division. Savings are estimated at $100,056.
- Cedar Rapids, where the Internal Revenue Service leased 6,794 square feet for a taxpayer assistance center. Savings are estimated at $174,688.
- Indianola, where the Fish and Wildlife Service leased 2,616 square feet for its Iowa/Illinois field office. Savings are estimated at $32,003.
In a related development, GSA on Tuesday posted a list of more than 440 federal buildings that may be sold in the coming months. Included on the list were the Neal Smith Federal Building in downtown Des Moines and the Iowa City Federal Building. However, on Wednesday, the list had been removed from GSA’s website.
