The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative’s Double Up Food Bucks Program has been awarded $4.8 million as part of the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) grant, which aims to tackle food and nutrition insecurity in underserved communities. According to a news release, the program will use the grant to achieve three goals: enhance the use of new technologies in Double Up Food Bucks locations, which include 97 Iowa-owned grocery stores, farm stands, farmers markets, co-ops and community-supported agriculture (CSA) operations; expand the program to independent grocers; and increase awareness and adoption through a “food navigator” outreach program. The program provides Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) users another dollar for every dollar spent on produce, up to $10 per day. The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative and Double Up Food Bucks were one of 14 awardees from across the country to receive GusNIP Nutrition Incentive funding totaling $36.3 million, the release said.
