The $16.2 million renovation of the building was fully funded by donations to the university’s the Ones campaign, and part of Greg and Cie Johansen’s $28 million gift to Drake, the largest single-donor gift in its history, went toward the project. Drake finished the project debt-free, according to a news release.
Greg Johansen is a 1976 graduate of Drake’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
The new student center includes meeting rooms, collaborative workspaces and student lounges. It will also house the Darling Institute, the Kinne Center and the Adams Leadership Institute.
Part of the residence hall has also been renovated into Drake’s first intercultural center using $1.75 million of a $3.15 million gift from Sammons Financial Group. The 2,700 square-foot Sammons Intercultural Center is focused on celebrating diversity through community programming, a news release said.
Another $750,000 of Sammons’ gift was used to create a community outdoor area named Sammons Plaza.
“For almost 100 years, these walls [Johansen Student Center] have served as a place of community amongst our student body,” Drake Student Body President Ashley Dyson said at the grand opening event on Thursday. “Now the building will continue that legacy by providing a dedicated space for students to build relationships, hone leadership skills, collaborate with community partners, and get plugged into the causes and issues they care about for generations of Drake students to come.”
