Drive Time Des Moines is seeking input to help it determine how many people drive alone to work versus other modes of transportation on their daily commute.

A survey, available at the organization’s website, www.drivetimedesmoines.org, is designed to give the group a benchmark to figure out how many people are using the Interstate 235 freeway and what can be done to alleviate traffic.

The group’s goal is to reduce traffic on the freeway by 10 percent.

Drive Time Des Moines is a Downtown Community Alliance program, which was developed at the onset of reconstruction in the early 2000s on Interstate 235 to try to reach the goal of reducing traffic that the corridor is not designed to hold.

“We haven’t really had a good way to benchmark our project since the completion of I-235,” said spokesperson Dana Conn. “We want more definitive numbers.”

This is the first survey effort the group has done, but Drive Time Des Moines plans to conduct the survey every two years to be able to measure progress.

Drive Time Des Moines hired Essman/Research in Des Moines to collect the data and formulate the results.

The survey asks respondents how many miles they travel one-way, what times of day they travel, how long it takes to get to work, whether they travel on the freeway to get to work and what their primary mode of transportation is. It also asks what reasons respondents have for not carpooling or taking public transportation if they drive alone.

The survey will be open for several more weeks, the group said. Drive Time Des Moines would like to get about 2,000 responses.
