Easterseals Iowa is one of 384 national organizations receiving a share of $4 billion in philanthropic gifts from MacKenzie Scott, a national author, billionaire and early-stage employee of Amazon. Scott identified 22 Easterseals affiliates nationally in her announcement, posted on the microblogging site Medium on Tuesday. Easterseals Iowa, which called the gift “transformational” in a statement, is the only Iowa-based organization on the list and serves people with disabilities or special needs. Scott signed the Giving Pledge in 2019, promising to give away at least half of her wealth throughout her lifetime. She did not share how much was given to individual organizations, but wrote that “the entire commitment would be paid upfront and left unrestricted in order to provide them with maximum flexibility.” In July, Scott announced she had given $1.7 billion to historically Black colleges and universities, women’s rights and LGBTQ equality groups, and initiatives addressing climate change, the New York Times reports.
