Dr. Bery Engebretsen, who has been chief medical officer of Primary Health Care Inc. since 1982, will step out of that role to become chief visionary, the nonprofit health center announced. During his tenure, the organization has grown to serve more than 37,000 people annually and includes 15 clinics in Des Moines, Marshalltown and Ames. “Dr. Engebretsen has shaped and created PHC into the organization that it is today, serving as PHC’s leader and visionary for the last 37 years and as a national leader as well,” said Kelly Huntsman, CEO of Primary Health Care. Engebretsen will be staying on to operate PHC’s Wellness Center three days a week and will continue to participate in the operation of the PHC residency programs. “I am looking forward to focusing on prevention and wellness activities for our patients,” Engebretsen said in a press release. Dr. Heidi Shreck, currently medical director of PHC, will take over as chief medical officer.
