EPA stands by Iowa water quality program

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declined to strip Iowa’s power to enforce federal water quality laws, the Des Moines Register reported. Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Environmental Integrity Project filed a petition in 2007 asking for tougher enforcement. The EPA had entered into an agreement with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in 2013 to ensure the DNR was meeting federal regulations. This week, the EPA said it is satisfied with the DNR’s progress and won’t revoke the DNR’s agreement to enforce the laws on the EPA’s behalf. CCI called the move “whitewashing.”
