Fareway moving headquarters from Boone to Johnston after 85 years
Des Moines Register: After 85 years headquartered in Boone, the Fareway supermarket chain will move its headquarters to Johnston. CEO Reynolds Cramer told the Des Moines Register today that he did not make the decision lightly. His great-grandparents, Paul and Mary Ellen Beckwith, opened Fareway’s first store on May 12, 1938, in Boone, and established the headquarters there despite having incorporated in Ames. But Cramer said Fareway is out of space at its current headquarters, and many of its employees now live in the Des Moines metro. The headquarters will move into a 42,000-square-foot building at 8800 N.W. 62nd Ave. that was the former home of the Iowa Bankers Association. One hundred employees will work out of the two-level building, and there will be room for more as Fareway grows, Cramer said. Eventually, more than 200 employees might work out of the Johnston office, he said.
