Welcome to the first full workweek of 2015. Here is a look back at a few stories you may have missed during the holiday rush:

1. The deadline for Forty Under 40 nominations is Friday

We are seeking nominations for our 16th annual Forty under 40 awards. Candidates will be judged on both professional accomplishment and involvement with civic organizations. 

2. CoOportunity Health taken over by state

An Iowa health insurance cooperative set up with federal assistance is short of capital and may be liquidated, Iowa’s insurance commissioner told the Omaha World-Herald.

3. Traffic deaths up in 2014

Iowa had 321 traffic-related deaths in 2014, four more than the year before, Iowa Public Radio reported, based on Iowa Department of Transportation statistics.

4. New public works director hired

The city of Des Moines has hired Jonathan Gano of Springfield, Mo., as its new public works director. He replaces current public works director Pat Kozitza, who officially retires today. Gano starts Jan. 26 at a salary of $145,000, according to the city. 

5. Smart spots: Ames, Iowa City residents among the smartest in U.S.

The pursuit of higher education is more common in America today than in previous generations.Yet, in some cities, a far higher percentage of residents are college educated. Both Ames and Iowa City made this list, compiled by MarketWatch.
